The Dilemmas of Competition and Collaboration:
An experiential workshop

Sometimes you succeed by competing and sometimes by collaborating. But how do you know which is the right choice? Does one come more naturally to you? Do you always compete? Do you always collaborate? Is it possible to learn both skills so that an appropriate choice can be made according to the situation?

The Resource Management Event and the Marketplace Event are a pair of experiential exercises that explore the complex issues of competition and collaboration in organisational life. They enable participants to experience how they react in different organisational situations which demand either collaboration or competition in order to succeed.

In the first exercise, The Resource Management Event, there will be opportunities to take up leadership and managerial roles, to engage in power struggles, to learn about group and inter-group dynamics and also to feel what it is like to be a subordinate in a managed system.

In the second event, The Marketplace, there will be an opportunity to work in a small group, to innovate your own product and to market it in competition with the products of
other groups. You will be able to experience the threat of failure, the excitement of innovation and to test your self-belief in your ability to sell yourself and your ideas. Both exercises include reflective periods for capturing your learning and there is continuous staff feedback and support throughout.

Your outcomes could include:

  • Understanding your response to the need for competition and collaboration
  • Increased understanding of individual, group and organisational dynamics
  • Learning about the difficulties of achieving corporate goals
  • Understanding competition for leadership and power
  • Development of your leadership and team-work skills
  • Awareness of the impact on you of marketplace competition
  • Development of your marketing skills
